About

My cats, Kinsey and Joey
Nathan Nun is an acrylic painter, illustrator, and digital artist who explores human political and social themes through an alternate world of anthropomorphic cats. Drawing upon his academic experience and the political art of the late 19th and 20th centuries, his ongoing major project, the Sovcat Project, is a window into a world of liberation and revolution. Paintings, posters, and drawings trace a narrative of the conflict, hope, and redemption of an alternate world as a way of critiquing our own world and history. The overarching project has grown through the production of pastiche political posters and public service ads to ink drawings and acrylic paintings depicting historical events and everyday life from this familiar, but feline, other world. The seriousness of political, social, and historical themes are juxtaposed with whimsy and humour, attempting to portray a vision of a hard-won, liberated world of justice, joy, and warmth. His animal portraits are loved for their fun, whimsy, and attention to detail.

A longtime artist, Nathan came to Toronto for graduate studies in political theory but decided to pursue a career in art that brings together his varied interests. His artwork has been shown in gallery group shows, fairs, and conventions, and has a dedicated, international, online following.

He currently resides in the east end of Toronto, Canada, with his bestest belle and inspurrational cat meowdels Remington and Tosca. (RIP lost comrades Joey and Kinsey).
